The short version: most accessibility fixes are SEO fixes wearing a different name. Alt text serves a screen reader and image search at once. Heading hierarchy serves a screen reader and a crawler at once. Descriptive links, landmarks, captions, contrast, and clear labels all do double duty. Fix the page for the person who needs it most, and every other reader, human or machine, reads it better too.

Most teams run accessibility and SEO as two separate checklists, owned by two separate people. Look closely and the fixes on each list are, more often than not, the same fix, filed under two different names.

The same list, read twice

The WebAIM Million, an annual scan of the top one million home pages, found 95.9 percent had at least one detected WCAG failure, averaging 56.1 errors per page (WebAIM, to re-verify). The six most common failures: low contrast text (83.9 percent), missing alt text (53.1 percent), missing form labels (51 percent), empty links (46.3 percent), empty buttons (30.6 percent), and missing document language (13.5 percent) (WebAIM, to re-verify). Every one is also a visibility problem: text a crawler cannot parse, an image with no description, a link pointing at nothing.

Does alt text help SEO as well as accessibility?

Yes, for image search. A screen reader announces alt text in place of an image it cannot render. Google's image SEO documentation confirms alt text is a primary signal it uses to rank an image in Google Images (Google), yet it is still missing on 53.1 percent of home pages (WebAIM, to re-verify). Write it plainly: what the image shows, in context.

Why does heading hierarchy matter for both screen readers and crawlers?

Both read a page by its outline before its sentences. Google's SEO Starter Guide recommends one h1 per page, with h2 and h3 in order, never skipped (Google). Screen reader users lean on that outline even harder: 71.6 percent navigate long pages by headings, far ahead of any other method (WebAIM, to re-verify).

What makes link text descriptive, and why does it matter twice?

A link reading "learn more" or "click here" tells a screen reader nothing out of context, and tells a crawler almost as little. Ambiguous link text is a top frustration in WebAIM's survey of screen reader users, where only 4.8 percent even navigate by links directly (WebAIM, to re-verify). Write link text that names the destination: "read the pricing guide," not "click here."

What are semantic landmarks, and do they help you get found?

Landmarks mark a page's structural regions (header, navigation, main, footer) using real HTML elements, not generic divs. A screen reader jumps straight to "main" and skips repeated navigation, and a crawler gets an unambiguous signal for boilerplate versus content worth indexing. Landmark use has declined among screen reader users (WebAIM, to re-verify), so treat headings as the priority and landmarks as a low-cost follow-through.

Do captions and transcripts really move visibility?

Search engines read text, not video or audio, so a caption file or transcript is often the only part of a video a crawler can index, and that same text is what a deaf or hard-of-hearing viewer needs. One study cited by Accessibility.com found captioned videos saw about 7.32 percent more engagement (Accessibility.com, to re-verify). Publish the transcript on the page itself, not a linked file, and both cases are made at once.

Why is color contrast a visibility issue, not just a design one?

Low contrast text is the single most common accessibility failure on the web, present on 83.9 percent of home pages and rising (WebAIM, to re-verify). WCAG 2.2 sets the AA bar at 4.5 to 1 for normal text, a threshold chosen to compensate for vision loss typical of a person in their eighties (W3C). That bar helps low vision, and just as much helps anyone reading on a washed-out phone screen in sunlight.

Why do clear labels matter for accessibility and for being found?

A form field with no visible label, or an icon-only button, forces a screen reader to guess or fall silent, and gives a crawler nothing to associate with that interaction. Missing form labels appear on 51 percent of home pages, empty buttons on 30.6 percent (WebAIM, to re-verify). A visible, plain-language label removes the guesswork for everyone.

Where to start this week

The order that pays off fastest:

  1. Scan the site and fix every missing alt text and empty link first: cheapest fixes, widest reach.
  2. Read the page outline out loud, headings only. If it does not make sense as an outline, a crawler will struggle too.
  3. Search for "click here" and "learn more," and rewrite each to name its destination.
  4. Check contrast against the 4.5 to 1 bar, not by eye.
  5. Add a visible transcript under every video, not just a caption track.
  6. Label every field and every icon-only button in plain language.

None of this is a trick played on a search engine. It is the same clarity a person benefits from, applied evenly, so a machine reads it too.
