The short version: The shift from advising brands to building for them directly did not happen in one project or one moment. It was a gradual change in what I was actually responsible for, and it rewired how every engagement worked. Once I held both the strategy and the build, a client's decision stopped needing to survive a handoff to reach the live result. That single change is the real thesis behind Thabrew Effect, and I lived it before I named it.

The same clients, a different relationship

For years, my relationship with a client had a natural shape. I would advise: diagnose the problem, shape the strategy, write the brief, and hand it to whoever was building. Then I would watch, from a slight distance, to see how much of that strategy actually made it into the live result.

What changed was not the clients. In many cases, it was the exact same kind of relationship, the exact same kind of brand, the exact same starting conversation about what needed to move. What changed was where I sat in it. Once I could build as well as advise, that same relationship stopped being two roles handed between two people. It became one person doing what used to take two, and watching the strategy travel intact for the first time.

What actually changed, concretely

The change was not that projects moved faster, although they often did. It was not that I could charge for more of the work, although that followed too. The real change was upstream of all of that: a decision made in a strategy conversation no longer had to be re-explained, defended, or occasionally lost, on its way into the actual build. If I decided a page needed to lead with a specific claim for a specific reason, that reason did not need to survive being written down, handed off, and reinterpreted by someone who was not in the room when it was made. It simply carried forward, because I was still there.

That sounds like a small thing. It is not. Multiply it across every decision in a project, and the difference between a strategy that survives its own build and one that slowly erodes on the way there is not incremental. It compounds.

The part nobody warns you about

Becoming the builder also changed what I was accountable for, and that part is worth being honest about. When I only advised, a gap between the strategy and the result could always be, at least partly, someone else's execution problem. Once I owned both, there was nowhere for that explanation to go. If the work did not land, it was not a handoff that failed. It was me.

That is a heavier kind of accountability, and I would not pretend otherwise. It is also, I think, the only honest way to actually test a piece of strategy: build it yourself, and find out immediately whether it was ever really right.

Why this became a system, not just a habit

None of this stayed a personal working style for long. It became the actual thesis of the studio, because the pattern held regardless of which client or which brand I was working with. Visibility work that never talks to accessibility work quietly damages both. A conversion decision made without the person who understands the brand behind it drifts from what the brand actually needs. The fix, in every case, was the same one I had already found for myself: put the reasoning and the execution in the same hands, and stop asking a decision to survive a relay it was never built to survive.

Thabrew Effect did not start as a slogan about one owner holding visibility, accessibility, and conversion together. It started as the only way I had found, in my own work, to stop losing what I kept losing.

Veelgestelde vragen
