SEO versus AEO versus GEO versus AIO: wat er echt toe doet

The short version: SEO gets your page ranked in a list of links. AEO gets your answer lifted whole into a direct response. GEO gets your brand cited inside an AI-generated answer. AIO is the umbrella term for optimizing across all AI-driven discovery at once. None of them replace SEO. AEO and GEO are built on top of it, and the honest priority order is: fix your SEO foundation first, then write for extraction, then earn citations.

Let me untangle the four letters, because right now most of what you'll read about them is either marketing fog or unearned panic.

Why four acronyms showed up in the same eighteen months

Something real is happening underneath the jargon, so let's start there before we define anything.

By 2026, 68.01 percent of Google searches in the US ended without a click, up from 60.45 percent in 2024, according to Similarweb clickstream data analyzed by SparkToro across January to April 2026 (SparkToro, to re-verify). The accelerant is specific: Pew Research found people click through on just 8 percent of searches when an AI Overview appears, versus 15 percent when it does not, on queries that now make up more than a fifth of all searches (via Similarweb, to re-verify). That gap, repeated across a fifth of all search volume, is most of why zero-click growth has accelerated the last two years.

At the same time, the destinations are shifting. Similarweb's own tracking found total AI referral visits across the web grew more than three times over between September 2024 and September 2025, with Claude's web traffic alone up roughly 770 percent in a similar window (Similarweb, to re-verify). Gartner went further in February 2024, predicting traditional search engine volume would fall 25 percent by 2026 as people turn to AI chatbots and virtual agents instead (Gartner). I will be straight with you here, since that is the whole point of this site: as of this writing, industry trackers have not found clear proof that the full 25 percent materialized on schedule, and the prediction has drawn real skepticism from people who study search data closely. Treat it as a directional warning, not a settled fact.

So the traffic is real, the shift is real, and four different disciplines grew up to describe four different parts of the same problem. Here is each one, plainly.

What is SEO, and why does it still matter?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of earning a page a strong position in a traditional search results list, built on crawlability, relevance, and authority signals like backlinks and site structure. The goal has always been the click.

SEO is not dying. It is the foundation everything else stands on. Google's own documentation states plainly that AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from the same index and the same core ranking systems as regular Search (Google). There is no separate "AI index" to sneak into. If Google (or Bing) cannot crawl, index, and trust your page in the first place, no AI engine sitting on top of that index will ever find you to cite. Every acronym below assumes SEO is already working.

What is AEO, and how is it different from ranking?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered features (Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants) can lift a direct, self-contained answer straight off your page without rewriting it from scratch.

The shift is subtle but total. SEO asks "does this page deserve position one." AEO asks "can a machine extract a clean, correct answer from this page in one pass." A page can rank on page one and still get skipped for citation, because the answer is buried under three paragraphs of throat-clearing. AEO is the discipline of removing the throat-clearing.

What is GEO, and where did the term come from?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of structuring content and digital presence so generative AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews) actively cite, recommend, or mention your brand while composing an answer, not just extract a fact from you.

This one has an actual founding paper, which is more than the other three can claim. Researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi coined the term in "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," presented at the ACM SIGKDD conference in August 2024 (Princeton, arXiv 2311.09735). Testing across roughly 10,000 queries in nine domains, they found that deliberate optimization techniques, adding cited statistics, quotations, and clear structure, could lift a page's visibility inside generative answers by up to 40 percent (same source, to re-verify). That is a controlled academic result, not a vendor claim, and it is the closest thing this whole space has to hard proof that any of this works on purpose rather than by accident.

The difference from AEO in practice: AEO optimizes for extraction of a fact. GEO optimizes for the AI choosing to name you at all, sometimes without sending any traffic your way.

What is AIO, and is it a real discipline yet?

AIO (AI optimization) is the umbrella term for optimizing a brand's visibility across every AI-driven discovery surface at once, treating SEO, AEO, and GEO as one coordinated effort rather than three separate jobs.

I want to be honest about this one specifically, because it is the newest and the vaguest. Unlike GEO, AIO has no founding research paper and no single agreed definition. It is mostly used by agencies and tool vendors as a convenient umbrella, and different sources draw its edges differently. That does not make it useless. As a strategic frame, "optimize for all AI-driven discovery as one system" is exactly right, and it is close to how Thabrew Effect approaches visibility generally. Just do not expect a tidy checklist under the letters "AIO" the way you can get one for GEO. Treat it as a mindset, not a technique.

The pattern across the row: nothing here stands apart from SEO. Each one adds a layer of intent on top of the same crawlable, authoritative, well-structured foundation.

Does AEO or GEO replace SEO?

No, and anyone telling you to drop SEO spend for "AI optimization" is selling you something. The consensus across the practitioners who study this seriously, not just the ones selling the acronym, is consistent: GEO and AEO enhance SEO, they do not substitute for it, because generative engines lean on many of the same authority and relevance signals traditional search already uses. A site with weak technical SEO, thin authority, and poor crawlability will not suddenly get cited by ChatGPT because you added a FAQ block. The order of operations matters: earn the foundation, then write for extraction, then earn citation. Skipping step one to chase step three is the single most common mistake I see.

So what should you actually prioritize, in order?

Here is the sequence I use, in the order I would spend a limited budget:

  1. Fix the SEO foundation first. Crawlable, indexed, fast, structurally sound, genuinely authoritative. If this is weak, nothing above it holds.
  2. Write for extraction (AEO). Question-shaped headings, a forty to sixty word self-contained answer directly underneath each one, tables wherever the content has parts to compare.
  3. Attribute everything. A named, checkable source on every claim you make. It is the single cheapest thing that helps both AEO and GEO at once.
  4. Earn mentions beyond your own site (GEO). Genuine coverage, community presence, and third-party discussion feed generative citation more than anything you can do on your own page alone.
  5. Treat it as one system (AIO). Stop running three separate projects. Every page should be built once, to do all three jobs.

None of this is exotic. It is the same discipline of clarity that has always separated good content from noise, aimed at a slightly wider set of readers, some of which are machines.

Two contested tactics people keep asking me about

I will save you the trouble on two popular shortcuts, because both come up in almost every conversation I have about this.

llms.txt. A file meant to tell AI models how to read your site sounds like an obvious win. In practice, no major AI provider has committed to reading it, and server-log audits keep finding close to zero access from AI crawlers. It has a narrow, genuine use for coding assistants reading developer documentation. For general AI search visibility, it is not where your time goes. Schema markup on its own. Structured data helps machines parse your page, but it is not a citation shortcut. Testing across roughly 1,885 pages that added schema found no reliable citation lift from schema alone. Add it, keep it truthful and identical to your visible text, and never expect it to rescue content that is not already good.
